Plan to beat Bromley’s midges back on table By Sarla Donovan A COSTLY solution to get rid of midges in Bromley was scheduled to be discussed behind closed doors last night. Coastal-Burwood Community Board and city council staff were to meet to discuss costings for installing a UV plant in the Bromley sewage treatment plant. It could cost $3000 daily in power charges. For years, Bromley residents have been surrounded by armies of midges during the summer months, in what has been described by board chairwoman Kim Money as being like a “biblical plague.” Bromley resident Janet Profit is one of those who has been pleading for action. She said she did not know the meeting was taking place and was disappointed not to have had any updates from city council staff or board members. Two months ago, city council staff were asked to come back to the board with short and long-term options to try and solve the problem. •Turn to page 3
Unique design wins award Second year Ara fashion design and technology student and Beckenham resident Marike Uys won the award of excellence at the Hokonui Fashion Awards in Gore. Ms Uys’ unique black box design, opened up on the catwalk to reveal three-dimensional coloured panels which won over the judges. Ms Uys, who is a former architect, was surprised by her win, but promised she had plenty more ideas. WORLD fashion designer Denise L’Estrange Corbet, Donna Tulloch of Mild Red, Jason Lingard and NZ Fashion Week manager Janey Evett were unanimous in their praise of the design. FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK MORE TALK scheduled last night to try and get rid of the midges from the Bromley treatment plant. This will be no easy task. The insects have plauged anyone living near the plant for a long time. As the weather starts to warm up in the next few weeks they will be back – in force. A meeting was scheduled last night (see page 1) between the community board and city council staff and the key thing on the agenda was cost. Let’s hope they come up with a solution. News Denton Park likely choice By Julia Evans DENTON PARK is looking to be the likely home of the new Hornby Library, Service Centre and South West Pool mega facility. During the consultation process, the city council found submitters favoured Kyle Park and Denton Park over Warren Park. Kyle Park had the most support, with 43 per cent of people who submitted to the city council during its consultation period from April 20 to June 9, favouring it as the preferred site. Denton received five per cent less on 38. But due to the amount of asbestos in the ground at Kyle Park, Denton still seems to be the likely choice. City council staff have recommended the Halswell-HornbyRiccarton Community Board approve the location at its special meeting on Saturday. The board will then take its recommendation to the city council. City councillor Vicki Buck said because the full report isn’t out yet, it is a bit premature to comment.

Man and cat rescued from roof By Andrew King A MAN attempting to rescue a cat from a roof in Woolston ended up needing to be rescued himself – by the Fire Service. Woolston firefighters were called to Randolph St at about 12.45pm last Tuesday after a man used a fence to get on the roof to rescue a stricken feline, but was unable to get down. “We went up on the roof without a ladder,” a fire communications spokesman said. “Lucky he took his phone with him.” Both were rescued unharmed.

News Probation officer retires after 32 years LINDA WINSKILL, a teacher and then stay-at-home mother with two small children had all the makings of a Department of Corrections staff member without knowing it. Thirty-two years on, Ms Winskill retired last week from her role as service manager in Canterbury Corrections. “A person working with offenders needs to be able to connect with people from all walks of life,” says district manager Lisa Joseph. ‘‘Being a mother, a teacher and having a social conscience are good places to start.” “I wanted to work as a social worker and had applied for a job with the old Department of Social Welfare,” Ms Winskill said. “However, they required an assurance that you were prepared to go anywhere in the country to work which I couldn’t do with a young family.” A friend was a manager at the Department of Justice, as Corrections was then, and suggested she apply for a job as a probation officer. She got the job and immediately really loved it. “There was no formal training for the role of probation officer, you learned on the job,” she says. Ms Winskill’s first job was

to write reports before being given a ‘nominal caseload’, working with low risk offenders. This enabled her to learn the sentencing and offender management skills that would become her craft. “Working with people on
sentence is very challenging and very rewarding,” she says. “While a large proportion of the people we work with we see only once, there are those we get to know far too well. “Working with someone to make change, through the
bumps they encounter along the way, is incredibly rewarding. You are changing what is sometimes a lifelong behaviour and belief system.” Over the years, Ms Winskill has worked with hundreds, even thousands of people on sentence,

of public service “Being a probation officer can be a tough job. Probation officers find themselves being mentor, support, parent, all rolled into one. They need to be able to effectively engage the offenders they work with and to also hold them to account. They need to identify and act appropriately to changes in behaviour, when things are going well and when they are going badly.” Ms Winskill carried on her Corrections career as a probation officer until her appointment as service manager in 1999 when she took over the management of a team of 13 probation staff. There have been many significant changes over the 30 years, particularly in the number of offenders in the community and also the oversight required of community offenders. “While drug use has always been a concern, the increased use of methamphetamine has been a growing challenge for offenders, Corrections and the community as a whole,” Ms Winskill said. “People start using drugs from all sections of the community and for a myriad of reasons,” she said, “but many

end up in the same place; fighting an addiction and with criminal charges. “Seeing a person make a significant change in their thinking and behaviour; finishing a rehabilitation programme, finding a job, these are highly satisfying parts of a probation staff members job.” New sentences and orders introduced over the past 10 years and new technology for managing offenders in the community have changed the role and community expectations of the work of Corrections and

what can be done to safeguard the community. In 2003, Ms Winskill was seconded to Wellington and worked in Corrections’ National Office for three months on developing KPIs for probation staff. It’s particularly hard when we get negative media. The Corrections team do incredible work, mentoring and supporting some of our most difficult citizens and it is great to see more about the positive work Community Corrections does.” “Corrections is a really good employer and there are lots of opportunities to move to different roles. “The people who work for the department are mostly great fun to work with. The work is never boring and time flies by. Look at me, 32 years on. “Most important to me are the enduring friendships I have made in my time here and the wonderful Corrections’ staff,” Ms Winskill said. For her, and husband Alan, who is also retiring from the department after 17 years, retirement includes “more time with grandchildren, more time to travel, garden, stained glass work and sleeping in.”

News Evie’s connection to school By Julia Evans EVIE LAIDLAW is 12 and she doesn’t know a world without mobile phones, Facebook and the internet. But Evie is part of a legacy that dates back to when her school, Rangi Ruru Girls’ School, opened in 1890. Through her father Robert Laidlaw and grandfather John Laidlaw, Evie is a direct descendant of the Gibson family who opened Rangi Ruru in 1890. The school celebrated Founder’s Day on Wednesday. Three generations of the Laidlaw family were at the school to mark the occasion and Evie was asked to light a candle during the service. “It was a really special service for Evie,” said Robert Laidlaw. Captain Frederick Gibson built the school and his daughters Helen, Mary, Beatrice, Alice, Lucy, Ethel, Ruth and Winifred ran the school for nearly 60 years. The Gibson sisters were Evie’s grandfather’s great aunts. But just about every woman on both sides of Evie’s family

Until now she hasn’t understood the importance of the family’s historic connection. “I think she’s just starting to realise the importance of the school to the family and she’s making the most of it,” he said. The family pulled out all the stops to get her there. “We were fortunate enough to have the opportunity to send her to the school and she knows it’s a privilege,” he said. The entire family is very proud, especially grandfather John who is thrilled his granddaughter will be carrying on the traditions of the past.

News Eels get new home CITY COUNCIL ecologists have got their hands on some slippery characters in need of a new waterway. Students from Te Waka Unua, Linwood College and Kimihia Parents College also got close to the action during the removal of 26 shortfin eels from a Woolston drain. Clearing the eels will make way for the development of an urban forest. As infrastructure for the urban forest takes root in the former lower fields of Linwood College, the eels old home is being diverted. Work to redirect the timberlined Arran Drain will intercept the base flow, so the eels – ranging from less than 250mm to greater than 500mm long – have had to slip into a new site. “Native fish and their spawning habitats are legally protected, so we have to take great care not to harm fish when doing any works around waterways,” city council waterways ecologist Greg Burrell said. “Several shortfin eels were found during a survey of the section of Arran Drain affected by the wetland construction. They are among our most hardy and better climbing native fish species, which is why they’re able to

themselves in a newly-created forested habitat that will be a major improvement on their previous home.” The urban forest, off Ferry Rd, is a key element in the $9 million Bells Creek flood mitigation scheme, utilising the earthquake-damaged school fields. Eventually, the 2.75ha forest will again ring with native birdsong, attracting bellbird, kereru, fantail and tui amid totara, matai and kahikatea trees. A sealed pathway and boardwalk bridges will guide the community on an exploratory journey into the urban wilderness.

Evening city crews were called to a house in Sewell St, Linwood, on July 29, where a wheelie bin, close to the house, was found to be on fire. A recent spate of these type of fires in Burnside had resulted in an arrest. Nearly all these incidents are the result of deliberate acts by people who get some form of satisfaction out of arson. So the fire in Linwood appeared to indicate another area of town was in someone’s sights. That was until some questions were asked and it was found that ash from the fireplace had been dumped into the bin on the same day. Don’t ever do this. Ash can stay hot enough for five days to ignite combustibles. It should never be placed in a plastic container. Like a wheelie bin. On July 30, a mother and father in Ilam were disturbed from their lie-in by a fire crew

hammering on their door. To their horror, the reason turned out to be one of the kids, up and about before the parents, had placed a prank call on the 111 system. We take these types of incident seriously. We call them malicious false alarms for a start. Our Fire Awareness and Intervention programme were utilised to work with the child so they understand the possible consequences. Because any time a fire truck is responding to such a false alarm they are unavailable for a real emergency that is perhaps happening near them. That has the potential for real tragedy.

BAKED PEARS WITH VANILLA AND BAY LEAF SYRUP Ingredients 4 Pears, packham 4 sheets Puff pastry 2 Tbsp Milk 1 Egg Syrup 1 Vanilla bean 2 Bay leaves ¾ cup Caster sugar ½ cup White wine ½ cup Water 1 Tbsp to serve Cream Directions Preheat the oven to 180 deg C. Line a baking tray with baking paper. Peel the pears, leaving on the stalks, then slice a sliver off the bottom of each so they sit flat. Lay one sheet of pastry on a lightly floured bench. Sit a pear in the centre and bring the pastry up around the pear. Trim the excess, then seal to ensure the pear is completely enclosed. Use the excess to make leaf shapes and press onto the
pastry. Whisk the egg and milk together then brush all over the pears. Bake for approximately 25min or until golden. Meanwhile, make the syrup by putting all the ingredients into a saucepan and then bring to a boil. Stir then let it reduce – this should take approximately 20min. Serve the pears hot with the syrup poured over and softly whipped cream on the side. VENISON STEAKS WITH KUMARA AND PARSNIP BAKE
Ingredients 50g Butter 500g Orange kumara, peeled 500g Parsnips, peeled 2 cloves Garlic, cut into slivers 1 Tbsp Fresh thyme 1 cup Chicken stock, or vegetable stock, use more if needed 4 Venison, steaks 6 stems Silverbeet, roughly chopped 1 Tbsp to serve Fruit chutney Directions Heat the oven to 190 deg C. Use half of the measured butter to grease a medium-sized ovenproof baking dish.

Cut kumara and parsnip into 3mm thick slices (a mandolin is useful here). Layer kumara and parsnip slices with the garlic, thyme and remaining butter into the baking dish finishing with kumara slices. Carefully pour in the stock and season. Hydrate to elevate We all know drinking water is important, but the majority of us simply don’t drink enough even though we know it makes us feel great when we do. We look at the benefits and motivate you to drink more with a few tips on how to make it just a little more palatable. With over a quarter of Kiwis consuming less than two glasses of water a day and only 5% drinking more than the recommended eight, the message obviously hasn’t hit home on the importance of hydrating our body. A recent survey conducted by SodaStream found that Cantabrians are particularly guilty when it comes to their water intake. With 82% drinking less than six glasses of water a day, but with over 85% admitting they feel healthier when they drink more water, something needs to be done to bridge the gap in terms of what we know to be true and what we’re actually doing about it. This same survey revealed that although 41% of us limit how many soft drinks we consume due to our concerns over sugar content, the same number of people said tea or coffee is their number one drink of choice.
Some people even believe that the water consumed in their cup of Joe constitutes part of their water intake. This is a fallacy. As caffeine actually dehydrates us, as does alcohol too, it means we need to drink even more water to compensate. Not so surprisingly the reason we don’t drink nearly enough water is that we simply forget. Now with apps you can download direct to your smart phone, there are no more excuses. Further studies proved that people who had a SodaStream machine in their homes were more likely to drink more water. In fact, the study showed that people drank 30% more water. For those of us who aren’t used to drinking water like it’s going out of fashion, there are plenty of ways to increase the fun factor while still being healthy.
